Sweet Little 'Tea for Two' Birthday Party

IMG_8060.JPG

Last month my little girl turned two and I had a sweet little get together for her that turned out so cute. I am slightly obsessed with planning birthdays/parties so I was super excited to create something unique for this year. Her first birthday was a beautiful boho theme and it was of course super tempting to go with the same theme this year because I LOVE everything boho, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I searched Pinterest for weeks trying to find a cute 2nd birthday theme that wasn’t the typical bright colors and cupcakes and unicorns and characters, etc. Nothing against anyone who likes those things, it’s just not my cup of tea. (Ha, see what I did there ;))

I was chatting with a friend about what I kind of wanted as far as decor but I couldn’t think of an official theme. I’m that weirdo that likes to make a clever little saying for my littles’ birthdays. My son’s first birthday was a Wild One theme, his second was a Two-Rex theme, and my daughter had a She’s a Wild One for her first, so I had to continue the tradition. I knew I wanted a pretty, vintage floral feel and a tea party type theme. Somehow we came up with ‘Tea for Two’ and I fell in love with that.

I specifically wanted to center around the daisy. I love daisies and since her last birthday was very floral-focused in more of a boho style, I wanted this party to be slightly different and unique in its own way. I wanted small, vintage-looking prints rather than big and bold. I searched online for what seemed like an eternity for the perfect tablecloth, but everything I found was weeks out for delivery and I didn’t want to risk it not showing up in time. We are very limited in our shopping options where I live so I made the two hour drive to the “city” with more shopping options like Target, Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, etc. Yes I live two hours from Target and I am not okay lol. I went into Hobby Lobby and looked at every single roll of fabric that they had. Twice. I almost gave up and then I saw this adorable mustard colored daisy fabric, pretty much the exact color I was looking for! Somehow I missed it the first hour of searching, but there it was, in all it’s adorable, vintage floral glory. My dining table is 6 feet long so I got three yards to make sure I had plenty. It was PERFECT. I also found a couple muted stripe fabrics that I thought would pair really well with the mustard and the rest of the theme, so I got a couple yards in each of those even though I had no idea what I was going to do with them. Okay, I sort of had an idea of where I’d put them but I wasn’t 100% sure. One of the striped fabrics I ended up putting on this little cabinet that I used for the main decor piece that had the sweets on it and the ‘Tea for Two’ banner:

I love how the white and light gray striped fabric turned out on this table. It looked so cute with the cake and the banner and everything! I got these cute little craft daisies at Hobby Lobby and sprinkled them on all the tables like confetti. I also found that adorable daisy decoration at Hobby Lobby that I couldn’t resist. It has the same green on the sides that is on the cake, that and mustard were the main colors I was wanting to center around. And white of course. The cake stand I already had and I believe it came from Target, as well as the pretty case and floral arrangement that of course came from Hearth and Hand at Target. The ‘Tea for Two’ banner was a little more complicated. I ordered a banner off Etsy that was supposed to come way before the party, but the shop owner created the label for my package but didn’t actually give it to the post office for a whole week. So I was scrambling two days before the party to come up with something. I was set on that banner, it was the main decoration of the party and the whole theme, so I didn’t want to compromise. I knew Hobby Lobby carried the letter balloons separately so I made the decision any rational person would do and drove two hours to get them. I used some string I had and made my own dang banner. Despite the E not wanting to stay blown up, it turned out cute! The cake and macaroons I had done by my favorite local baker, The Cooling Rack. She always makes the BEST sweets! I went with a dairy free vanilla cake and it was absolutely delicious. The macaroons were pistachio, chai and white chocolate raspberry. So yum.

The other striped fabric I got served as the gift/drink table. It looked SO cute with that brown wrapping paper!! For the drinks I did a Crystal Light lemonade and a Strawberry infused herbal tea sweetened with erythritol. They were a hit!

Now for the food table. Admittedly my favorite part. I had to make a bunch of tea sandwiches for the tea party, right? I went with the classic cucumber sandwich and pimento sandwich on regular bread, and because half of our guests are dairy and gluten free I did peanut butter & jelly and a turkey & avocado on gluten free bread. One of my favorite party foods is the puff pastry pizza rolls- so YUM! I also did a simple charcuterie board with cheese, meat, gluten free crackers, gluten free pretzels, nuts and fruit/nut clusters, which I felt was perfect for a kid party. A veggie tray with homemade ranch and little fruit cups were also great for snacking and little hands.

Let’s talk about these daisy plates. I looked EVERYWHERE for these dang plates. I saw them in a picture and became obsessed so I searched up and down online but they were sold out almost everywhere. I finally found one pack and ordered them off some online store only to get a notification the next day apologizing that they were out of stock. I was so sad but I didn’t give up. Somehow I came across Design Life Kids and they had like one pack left in stock so I snagged them real quick and hoped they’d arrive in time. So I’m sorry in advance if you fall in love with these plates like I did but then can’t find them anywhere. I’m the worst.

I love a good food table set up. My serve ware collection is slowly growing but it’s at a good place right now for these intimate parties. Everything you see here was bought at either Target or Hobby Lobby- I highly suggest both of those places if you need some new serving plates and bowls and platters but don’t want to spend much. I went with gold forks and white napkins to balance out the colors and I thought it looked nice. The balloon arch was surprisingly a lot easier than I anticipated. Funny story, I actually got some balloon arch tape back in January for my son’s birthday but I was so intimidated by it and overwhelmed when decorating that I just said forget it. And I carried that “tape” around in my car for months intending on returning it. When Aveya’s birthday rolled around I was determined to finally do that arch. I knew I wanted mostly white with hints of gold and yellow to go with the theme. All I did was blow up a bunch of balloons and start sticking them through the little holes on the arch tape. It’s kind of one of those figure it out as you go things. I love how it turned out! The balloons with the greenery stem were actually a dollar spot find at Target. They weren’t planned but they fit in perfectly with the theme and were only $3 so I had to buy them.

I bought a bunch of balloons in white, gold and yellow to do that balloon arch in the kitchen, but the wall in the living room was pretty bare so my mom who was in town visiting had the idea to make a daisy out of the balloons and the greenery from those dollar spot balloons as the stem. It worked out perfectly as a little photo-op area where she opened her presents. Overall I had so much fun planning and decorating for this party. We only had two families over who happen to be both of our neighbors so it was super intimate and precious and I loved that. If you’re anything like me when you are looking for birthday party ideas, you want the cut and dry post with links to everything. “I love that, I want that, where is the link for that?” So I figured I would make it easy for you guys and link as much as I can in this post.
